Now, this might sound like a shameless plug, and maybe it is a little, but more than promoting myself as a sober coach, I want you to understand what that actually means and how it can help you, Mr./Mrs. Grey-Area Drinker.
When I quit drinking, I was a fully functional adult. I had a solid social life, a great relationship, and a high-performing role in a multinational company. But something felt off. Every time I drank, I felt dusty, my sleep was messed up, and the next day was just hard to deal with. And then there was that lingering anxiety: Why do I need that second glass? Why does alcohol always have to be part of socializing? How much is too much? When should I stop? Can I do without it? Mental micro-tears that chipped away at my resilience.
On top of that, alcohol was connected to everything I considered “normal.” Friday night dinners with wine, beers on the beach during vacations, weekend barbecues with Aperol Spritz....
But it wasn’t until my second year of sobriety that I truly saw the pattern. The first six months were rough. Triggers, brain rewiring, shifting social circles, health changes, and figuring out new hobbies. A full reset. I did it cold turkey, and it was hard.
I wish I’d had a coach. Someone to keep me accountable, to check in and offer an objective perspective on what I was going through. Someone to help me shape the vision of who I wanted to become and guide me toward it in a pragmatic, efficient, and thoughtful way.
That’s what a sober coach does. Let's talk more about it.
Sober coaching is a growing field in addiction recovery, offering a personalized alternative to traditional methods. Sober coaches (or recovery coaches) work one-on-one with clients to help them achieve and maintain sobriety. Many coaches have personal experience with addiction and recovery, paired with formal training and certification. Sober coaches are great in early recovery when the risk of relapse is highest.
What Sober Coaches Aren’t:
Sober Companions: Sober companions live with clients full-time. Sober coaches provide scheduled support
Sponsors: Sponsors typically guide people through the 12-step program. Sober coaches take a more tailored, personalized approach.
Therapists: While therapists focus on diagnosing and treating mental health issues, sober coaches focus on practical, action-driven support to help clients manage daily life and stay accountable.
What Do Sober Coaches Do?
Sober coaches offer emotional support and practical guidance throughout recovery. They help you create a personalized plan, manage triggers, and build healthy coping strategies. With a focus on accountability and motivation, they help you stay on track and build routines for lasting sobriety.
They also focus on emotional well-being with holistic strategies like mindfulness, nutrition, and exercise. Many coaches offer extensive support, so you always have someone to turn to when needed.
Famous Sober Coaches & Their Clients
Bob Marier is known for helping former Toronto mayor Rob Ford with his addiction struggles. Heather Lowe is celebrated for her compassionate, strengths-based approach. Janey Lee Grace, founder of The Sober Club, focuses on both sobriety and wellness through her coaching programs.
Many celebrities have also turned to sober coaches for support. Robert Downey Jr., Owen Wilson, Lindsay Lohan, Dominic Fike, Drew Barrymore, and the Olsen twins have all worked with sober coaches to maintain their recovery. Brad Pitt has openly discussed his struggle with alcohol and has reportedly relied on a sober coach to stay on track.
